Solo exhibit - “Monument”

William havu Gallery •  Denver, co •  Nov. 15, 2019 - Jan. 11, 2020

Monument, my first solo exhibit in Denver, opens this November at William Havu Gallery in the Golden Triangle Arts District a few blocks south of the Denver Art Museum. The show hinges around a centerpiece series of plein air paintings on the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument and its million-dollar view of the Rio Grande Gorge. The new series serves as the starting point for a foray into the layered complexities of landscape and place.

Amidst the changing land use priorities nationally (such as delisting of national monuments) and global debates regarding human habitation and its implications for ecosystems worldwide, Monument scales down to one locale – Taos, NM – with a rich tapestry of intersecting cultures, land use designations, and monumentally grand vistas. Within the paintings is evidence of the awesome, simple aesthetic impact of weather, time, and scale in nature, as well as the complexities of legislated land-use jurisdictions, contrasting ideas of “appropriate” use, and more. Monument is an homage to the grand vista and the immersive landscape of northern New Mexico. And it also is an exploration into questions such as: Why do we monumentalize nature? What do the grandest places elicit in our psyches? How do the institutionalized ideas of land uses, such as “wilderness” and “tribal land” and “national monuments” intersect and overlap, and what is evoked by these designations and their overlaps? What history is embedded in these grand places? And what does monumentalizing them look like today?

It's a big show with around 40 pieces, including eight paintings from my newest series, "Lone Tree." You can view works on hand at Heinley Fine Arts' website (link).

The opening reception is 9/23 from 5 - 8pm, and the show runs through October.

Artist focus - “atmosphere”

Altamira Fine ARt  •  Jackson, wy  •  august 2016

Mountain squalls, valley light; 40" x 70" (diptych), available through Altamira Fine Art – (307) 739-4700 or

The paintings in Atmosphere were inspired by atmosphere that is both near and far: the one that extends for hundreds of miles to the horizon, its storms reaching cacophonous heights, and the quiet, intimate one that envelops our structures in sun-infused morning air or imbues all we see with pillowy softness.

In painting this body of work I aimed to hold three things equal: conveying the mood of distinct moments of weather and light, relaying recognizable imagery, and handling paint such that the creative process is made visible and the raw material remains a central part of a painting’s reason for being.

Here is the ISSUU eCatalogue for the show:

A large solo show of landscape work featuring two of my largest pieces to date - a 48" x 120" and a 48" x 118" (pictured above). As a counterpoint, a group of smaller pieces also seems to be taking shape; they're playing with atmosphere and form in a more distilled manner and have been fun to work on alongside the larger works. Here is a link to the Issue digital exhibit catalogue, featuring an essay by Ken Marvel.

The opening will be March 25th at LewAllen Galleries' Santa Fe Railyard location (Across from SITE Santa Fe): 1613 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe, NM, 87501. For information or purchase inquiries, contact LewAllen Galleries at (505) 988-3250 or

Hallowed Ground / ABQ

HARWOOD Art Center•   Albuquerque, NM•   August 7 - 27, 2015

Hallowed Ground / ABQ is a small institutional solo exhibition that presents the first mixed-media works of the Hallowed Ground project. Incorporating oil painting, sound recordings, and found objects, the pieces explore multilayered socio-environmental narratives embedded in New Mexico’s cultural landscapes. From Taos to downtown Santa Fe, Apache Canyon to Algodones, New Mexico – as anywhere – has been shaped and reshaped by the prevailing ideologies that have rolled through the region. The resulting places are often surprising, aesthetically moving mixtures of "old" and "new," and fertile examples of larger social, environmental, and economic challenges we collectively face today.

Through dyads of paintings that juxtapose contrasting views of the same locations – such as a historic old chapel and interstate construction thirty feet from its front door, or a bright new gas station across the street from open pasture below Taos Mountain – Hallowed Ground invites audiences to consider a bigger picture of each remarkable place and the impacts that our collective choices have on this land.

My first exhibition with Altamira Fine Art is a good one – a group show at the Jackson location of "smaller" works by a number of the West's outstanding contemporary artists. I'm glad to be participating and eager to see the exhibition. Below are the pieces at the show; they aren't exactly small, but for me I guess they qualify! Follow this link to see the rest of my work currently on hand at Altamira.

2014 Fall Solo - Sky Above | Earth Below

Heinley Fine Arts  •  Taos, NM   •   Through November

My only solo exhibition in 2014 builds on last year's near sell-out show. This year's fall solo will feature over thirty new pieces that dive deeper into the parallel potentials of paint as abstract, textural, colorful raw material and as vehicle for recognizable image. The pieces pay homage to the power and gravity of Northern New Mexico's weather, structures, and land – while also exploring the dynamic, entrancing rhythms that arise from a process that is as much about the material as the subject. Call (617) 947-9016 or visit the Gallery Website for information on purchasing work. The gallery is located at 119 Bent Street in Taos, NM (map).

My painting, "Painted Rocks" will be on display an available for purchase as part of the beautiful museum's fundraising effort. Under the Hill

Blumenschein Museum  •  Taos, NM  •  September 20, 2013 - February 2014

My largest figure painting will be on view at the Blumenschein Museum's exhibition of 40-years-old-or-younger artists. The piece, Contemplating the Nei Jing, is 72" x 72" and consists of six 24" x 36" panels. It's huge, was painted with a live model, and is one of my favorite and riskiest pieces. I'm thrilled it's been invited for the exhibition.
